Malibu is the area of the week. Start at Malibu Lagoon State Beach, where day-use parking opens at 8am, and walk the nature trails around the lagoon before the beach. It's a birdwatching spot; dogs stay in the parking lot.
Next door, the Adamson House grounds open seven days a week. Then drive or walk to the Malibu Country Mart on Cross Creek Rd, where the lots cost nothing, for John's Garden at 9am.
